When Do We Imprison Ourselves in a Cage of Our Own Making?

Hello, everyone. How was your day today? Every day, we run fiercely toward a better tomorrow. A higher salary, a stable family, a successful life that others would envy, and solid retirement plans. These are all goals we have chosen in order to become happy.

However, a sudden doubt sometimes creeps in: “Why do I feel more anxious and restless the harder I try to achieve what I want? Why does life feel more draining the closer I get to success?”

As we catch our breath at the end of this exhausting day, I would like to share a story about the ‘invisible prison’ that keeps our minds captive.

1. The ‘Flawed Program’ We Fail to Realize

Let’s imagine a child who happened to be born in a communist country. Regardless of their own will, this child grows up believing that the laws and values of that society are the absolute truth. If they work hard within that system, achieve great things, and find success, they will believe they are a genuinely valuable and honorable person.

However, this is a ‘confined mindset’ born out of not knowing that a wider world exists. What would happen if this child crossed the border and experienced a world of true freedom? They would experience the shock of having the very foundation of the life they believed to be right completely shattered. At the same time, they would finally realize that they had been trapped in a narrow world.

Sadly, those of us living in the present day are not much different from this child, often controlled by a similar ‘flawed program.’ This is because we unknowingly imprison ourselves within the societal value that says, “My achievements and performance define my worth.”

2. Bars Named Passion and Ambition

We set various goals that we believe will bring us happiness. Success in business, becoming wealthy, the safety of our family, a comfortable life… these are all incredibly precious and valuable desires.

However, the moment these beautiful desires turn into an ‘ambition that I must achieve at all costs,’ the landscape of our mind changes completely. The moment we harbor the dream of business success, all the time and energy in our lives are reorganized toward that single direction.

To pay the price of success, we postpone time with our loved ones, worry constantly to save money, and lock ourselves in an excessive passion that tempts us to use any means necessary. The cart draws the horse. It is a sorrowful moment when the very thing we started in order to be happy turns into a self-consuming prison of misery.

When we try to validate our existence based on the standards set by the world, we willingly walk into the prison of our own mind and lock the door. The blood-sweating effort to prove our worth through external achievements paradoxically becomes the very source of our deepest unhappiness.

3. Opening the Prison Door and Walking Into True Freedom

Now, it is time to quietly ask ourselves: “When and where did you build the prison of unhappiness that you are trapped in right now?” Is it the values of the country you were born in? Is it the deficiencies of the family environment you grew up in? Or is it the gaze and judgment of the people you have met throughout your life?

By whom, and where, are we imprisoned today? And after this life ends, where will we be imprisoned next?

The only way to escape from a prison is to acknowledge that you are trapped and to let go of the heavy burden of trying to prove yourself. Your worth is not proven by the achievements you have made or the bank balance you have accumulated. You are already sufficiently radiant and honorable just as you are, by virtue of your existence given unconditionally.

Try to break free from the world’s false program that says you only become a valuable person if you succeed. When you step out into a wider world of the mind and experience true freedom, the prison of unhappiness that has weighed heavily on us for so long will finally crumble.

Tonight, I hope you can loosen the tight leash of ambition a little bit and whisper to your exhausted soul: “You don’t have to prove anything; you are already a deeply precious person.”

In Closing,

I would like to leave you with a few questions to reflect on the precious trajectory of your life. Take a moment to catch your breath and answer them as if whispering to the center of your heart.

  1. What is the happiness you have postponed to the future, thinking, ‘If I could just achieve this, I’d be happy’?
    • Take a moment to reflect on whether you are bypassing the small joys existing by your side right now for the sake of ‘later success.’
  2. Are you compromising your true self and conscience bit by bit just to be recognized by others?
    • Ask yourself if you are losing your inner peace and integrity—the most precious things to protect—while trapped inside the bars of external achievements and reputation.
  3. Is the ‘goal (ambition)’ you hold growing you, or is it consuming you?
    • There is a fine line between passion and obsession. Quietly observe whether your dream makes you free, or if it is pushing you into a prison of anxiety and urgency.
  4. Have you ever questioned the ‘obvious common sense’ created by your environment (family, peers, societal standards)?
    • Like the child who thought their narrow world was everything, have you been blindly running after the ‘formula for success’ dictated by others’ opinions and society?
  5. If all the achievements and titles you hold right now were to disappear, would you still be a valuable person?
    • When you strip away the coats of business cards, job titles, and wealth and face the ‘real you,’ ask yourself quietly if you can still love and respect yourself.

Which question knocked the loudest on the door of your heart?

We already hold the key to open the door and walk out of the prison we made whenever we choose. If you have any life dilemmas or small realizations you are experiencing, please share them in the comments below. I root for true freedom and peace to rest upon your life, as you ran holding a heavy burden all by yourself today.
